How to enable comments in a Telegram channel
To enable comments in a Telegram channel, link a discussion group to it: open the channel → Edit → Discussion → create a new group or pick an existing one. Every new post then gets a comment button. Telegram has no separate “comments” switch: comments are messages in the linked group.
How to enable comments on a phone
- Open the channel and tap its name at the top.
- Tap Edit (the pencil icon on Android).
- Open the Discussion section.
- Tap “Create a New Group” or choose one of your groups from the list.
- Confirm the link. The group becomes the channel's chat.
How to enable comments on desktop
- Open the channel in Telegram Desktop, click the three dots in the top-right corner → Manage Channel.
- Choose Discussion.
- Create a new group or pick an existing one and confirm the link.
The channel owner or an admin with the right to change channel info can link a group. Each new channel post is automatically forwarded to the group, and replies to it there are the comments under the post.
Why are there no comments in my channel?
- No discussion group is linked: check the Discussion section in the channel settings.
- The post was published before the group was linked. The comment button appears only on posts published after linking.
- The post's copy was deleted from the discussion group: such a post loses its comments.
- Members are not allowed to send messages in the group: check the group permissions.
Can I have comments without a group?
No, comments in Telegram do not work without a group. You can make the group unobtrusive, though: keep it private, without a public link, and readers will only see the comment threads under posts. Third-party bots with comment buttons exist, but that is not Telegram's built-in feature and those comments are stored outside the messenger.
Who can comment, and how to change it
Comment rights are set in the discussion group: Edit → Permissions. That is where sending messages, media and links is allowed. The same screen decides who can write: every channel reader or only people who joined the group; joining can require admin approval.
How to turn comments off for one post or for all posts
- For one post: delete its copy in the discussion group. The post stays in the channel, the comment button disappears.
- For all posts: open Discussion in the channel settings and unlink the group.
How to keep spam out of comments
- Disallow links and media for members in the group permissions.
- Turn on slow mode: one message per chosen interval.
- Let only group members write and require approval to join.
- Add a moderation bot with the right to delete messages.
Comments and reactions are the two simplest signs that a channel is being read. Reactions are enabled separately in the channel settings and do not need a group.
