Telegram Ads vs paid posts in channels: which to choose and how to compare the price
In short: a paid post is a message in someone's channel arranged with its owner; Telegram Ads is a short platform ad shown across many channels at once and paid per impression. Paid posts are more precise and give you a full post with an image; Ads scale and go through moderation. Most often the combination wins: paid posts for the first warm subscribers, Ads for scale. Below is a point-by-point comparison and a way to compare the price.
The differences in one table
| Telegram Ads | Paid posts | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Up to 160 characters and a button, no image; a “sponsored” label | A regular channel post: any text, image or video, links |
| Where it shows | Under the latest message in large public channels | In one channel's feed, read by its subscribers |
| Who places it | The Telegram platform; you set channels, topics, languages | The channel owner, by agreement with you |
| Payment | Per impressions (CPM), bid in an auction | Per post, a fixed price set by the owner |
| Moderation | Platform rules: text, link, destination channel, prohibited topics | At the channel owner's discretion |
| Scale | Dozens or hundreds of channels with one ad | One channel, one negotiation |
| Price control | You set the bid; the result depends on competition | The price is known up front; the result depends on the channel |
| What is banned | The platform's list: gambling, high-risk finance, unverified medicine and more | Whatever the owner refuses |
When paid posts are better
- You need a full post: an image, a lead-in, several arguments. That does not fit in 160 characters.
- Your audience is 5–20 specific channels you know. Dealing with them directly is cheaper than competing for them in an auction.
- The topic fails Telegram Ads rules while being legal: the channel owner decides.
- You want the author's recommendation: “I read this channel, give it a try” beats any ad.
When Telegram Ads is better
- You need volume: hundreds of channels in one topic without messaging every owner.
- You want price control: lower or raise the bid, switch off weak channels.
- The topic is broad and has many channels: targeting by topic and language collects the audience for you.
- You need steady impressions day after day rather than a one-off spike from one post.
How to compare the price: per 1,000 views
A paid post is priced per post, Ads per 1,000 impressions. To compare, convert the post into the same unit: post price ÷ average views per post in that channel × 1,000. A channel asks $40 for a post with an average reach of 8,000 views: that is $5 per 1,000 views. Now it is comparable with a CPM bid in Ads.
Take the average reach from public data rather than the owner's word: the views under the last 10–20 posts. Our free audit shows average views and their ratio to subscribers; the tracker shows how they changed day by day.

How to vet a channel before paying for a post
- Views to subscribers. In a living channel post views are a noticeable share of subscribers; 50,000 subscribers and 800 views is a reason to walk away.
- Even views. One post with 40,000 views among posts with 600 is a boosted one-off or a forward, not an audience.
- Reactions and comments. A channel with reactions on and real comments is being read.
- Posting and ad pace. If every second post is an ad, yours will drown in other people's ads.
- Dynamics. A sharp rise in subscribers without a rise in views shows in the day-by-day tracker.
The combination that usually works
First 3–5 paid posts in channels whose audience you know: they bring the first warm subscribers and show which text and which promise work. Then Telegram Ads with the same message on the topic: scale without negotiations. In parallel, the channel must look like a place worth staying: a description, 10–15 posts, a subscriber count without zeros, views on recent posts comparable to the audience.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a paid post in a Telegram channel cost?
There is no fixed price: the owner sets it, and a sensible price depends on reach, not on subscribers. Use the formula above, post price ÷ average reach × 1,000, and compare channels by the cost per 1,000 views.
What other kinds of Telegram advertising exist?
Besides Ads and paid posts: cross-promotion (free post swaps between channels), ads in bots and mini apps through ad networks, traffic from outside sources landing on the channel (search ads, social ads, creators), and paid members as a starting push for the counters, which brings no audience but keeps the channel from looking empty.
How much do Telegram ads pay channel owners?
Owners of public channels with at least 1,000 subscribers receive 50% of the revenue from ads shown in their channel. There is no fixed rate per 1,000 views; it depends on advertiser demand for the topic.
