How to monetize a Telegram channel: 7 ways, what Telegram itself pays, and why bought members earn nothing
A Telegram channel earns money in seven ways: selling ad posts directly, a share of Telegram Ads revenue (50% for public channels with 1,000+ subscribers), paid posts and paid subscriptions in Telegram Stars, suggested posts paid in Stars or TON, affiliate links, your own products and services, and donations. All seven depend not on the subscriber count but on how many people actually read the posts: Telegram pays for ads shown to real users, advertisers pay for reach. So below are the methods first, then an honest answer to how much Telegram pays per 1,000 subscribers, and why bought members bring no money.
1. Selling ad posts
The main method for most channels: an advertiser pays for a post or a mention in your channel. The price is negotiated and tied to post reach (views), not to subscribers: buyers look at the average views per post and the cost per thousand views, then compare with other channels in the same niche. Advertisers are found through channel marketplaces, admin chats and direct outreach. What you need: open reach statistics, a clear topic and audience, a price list in the pinned message or description.
2. Telegram Ads revenue sharing
Since March 2024 Telegram gives owners of public channels with 1,000 or more subscribers 50% of the revenue from the ads it shows in their channels. It is switched on in the Monetization section of channel statistics; rewards accrue in Toncoin, can be withdrawn with no fees through Fragment or spent on Telegram Ads. Telegram shows these ads only to users without Premium and only in regions where Telegram Ads operates, so income depends on where your readers live and how many of them have Premium. There is no figure per 1,000 subscribers: payment is for ad views, not for subscribers.

3. Paid posts and paid subscriptions in Stars
Two built-in tools. Paid media: the photo or video in a post stays hidden until the reader pays the set number of Stars. Paid subscription: in a private channel you create an invite link with a monthly fee in Stars (Channel Type → Invite Links → Create a New Link → Require Monthly Fee); Telegram charges the fee automatically every month. The owner receives Stars on the channel balance; after 21 days they can be withdrawn as Toncoin through Fragment or spent on ads. Subscribers can also support a channel with a Star reaction under a post. Telegram's reference rate for rewards is $0.013 per Star received.
4. Suggested posts
Since July 2025 any user can suggest a post to a channel and attach a fee in Stars or Toncoin for publishing it. The owner edits the text and the price, accepts or declines; the reward arrives 24 hours after publication, and if the post is deleted earlier the money returns to the sender. There is no subscriber threshold: it works in a channel of any size and is essentially built-in ad sales without messaging or marketplaces.
5. Affiliate links
The channel posts a link with a referral code to a product, service or app and earns a percentage of purchases. Telegram has its own affiliate programs for bots and mini apps: a channel joins a program, publishes the link and gets a share in Stars from every payment made by the users it brought. It only works where the audience trusts the recommendation, so it needs a narrow topic.
6. Your own products, services and courses
The most profitable method for expert channels: consulting, courses, a private club, goods. The channel is a free storefront and warm-up; the sale happens through a paid subscription, a bot or an external site. Income does not depend directly on channel size: 2,000 readers on topic often buy more than 50,000 random ones.
7. Donations
Direct transfers from readers: Star reactions and gifts inside Telegram, links to donation services, a wallet. It rarely brings notable income, but for small author channels it is the first test: is anyone willing to pay for your content at all.
How much does Telegram pay for 1,000 subscribers?
Nothing for the subscribers themselves. Telegram pays for the subscriber count in none of its programs: Telegram Ads revenue is split by ad views in the channel, Stars come from specific buyers of paid content, subscriptions from specific payers. 1,000 subscribers is only the entry threshold for revenue sharing, not a rate. A channel with 1,000 subscribers and 100 views per post will see very small amounts in Monetization; a channel with 5,000 subscribers from countries without Telegram Ads will see zero. We do not quote exact figures: payouts depend on the audience's country, the share of Premium users and advertiser demand, and two channels of the same size get different numbers.
Why bought members do not monetize
- Telegram Ads revenue sharing is counted on ads shown to real users. Bought accounts do not look at ads — they help pass the 1,000 threshold but create no income.
- Advertisers buy reach, not subscribers. A channel with 10,000 subscribers and 300 views is spotted as inflated at a glance, and the price is set by views.
- Paid content, subscriptions and donations are paid by people. Bots do not pay.
- Telegram's terms for creator rewards explicitly prohibit fake impressions, automation and any non-genuine activity aimed at payouts: rewards can be withheld and the channel cut off from the program.
The honest place for paid members in this picture is the start: covering a new channel's empty counter so the first real readers do not leave, and lifting views on the first posts. It does not affect income; we sell members and views and say so plainly.
How to get Telegram members: free and paid ways
Where to start
- Make the channel public and reach 1,000 subscribers — real ones, from your topic.
- Turn on statistics and watch post reach, not the subscriber counter.
- Enable Telegram Ads monetization in channel statistics: passive income with no effort.
- Write a price list for ads based on reach and pin it; enable suggested posts.
- If your content is expert content, create a paid subscription or a private channel for Stars.
- Once a month compare income from each source and drop what does not work.
