How to pin a message in Telegram: channel, group and private chat, on iPhone, Android and desktop

To pin a message in Telegram, tap and hold it (right-click on desktop), choose Pin and confirm. The message appears in a bar above the chat. You can pin several messages: the bar shows the latest one and tapping it cycles through the rest. In a channel an admin pins; in a group an admin, or members if allowed; in a private chat either of the two people.

How to pin a message in Telegram on iPhone

  1. Open the chat and tap and hold the message.
  2. Choose Pin.
  3. Confirm and choose whether to notify members (in a group or channel) or whether to pin for both or only for yourself (in a private chat).

How to pin a message in Telegram on Android

  1. Tap the message once, or tap and hold it.
  2. Choose Pin (the push-pin icon at the top).
  3. Pick the notification option and confirm. The message appears in the bar above the chat.

How to pin a message on desktop

In Telegram Desktop and in the web version right-click the message → Pin → confirm. Untick “Notify all members” in the same dialog if you want to pin silently.

How to pin a message in a Telegram channel

In a channel the owner and admins with the right to edit messages can pin (a bot needs that same right). Subscribers see the pinned post in the bar above the feed, and if the notification is on they get an alert — even those who muted the channel. So pin important things quietly: untick the notification. The usual pinned post is a channel guide: what the channel is about, where to start reading, how to get in touch.

How to pin a message in a Telegram group

In a group, admins with the “Pin messages” right can pin. To let every member pin, open Edit → Permissions → Pin Messages. If there is no Pin item in the menu, that permission is off — ask an admin.

How to pin a message in a private chat

In a one-on-one chat either person can pin. Telegram asks whether to pin for both or only for you; in the second case the other person sees nothing. Handy for addresses, shopping lists and agreements.

Pinning several messages

Since 2020 any chat can have multiple pinned messages. The bar above the chat shows the most recent one; tap it to jump to the previous ones, or open the list of all pinned messages with the button on the right of the bar. The same list has “Unpin all”.

How to see pinned messages in Telegram

Tap the bar above the chat — Telegram scrolls to the pinned message. The list button on the bar opens a separate screen with all pinned messages. If there is no bar, it was hidden: open the chat menu (⋮ or the chat name) and choose Unhide Pinned Message. New members see pinned messages the same as everyone else: they come from the chat history, which in channels and groups is open to anyone who joined.

How to unpin a message

  • One message: tap the message → Unpin, or the cross on the bar (it unpins the current one).
  • All messages: open the pinned list and tap Unpin All.
  • Hide the bar only for yourself without unpinning: the cross on the bar in a group where you are not an admin, or Hide Pinned Message in the chat menu.

Why can't I pin a message in Telegram?

  • In a channel you are not an admin, or you lack the right to edit messages.
  • In a group pinning is disabled for members: you need the Pin Messages permission or admin rights.
  • An outdated app — update Telegram.
  • In a private chat any message can be pinned, including the other person's; if the item is missing, restart the app.

How to pin a chat (not a message)

To keep a chat at the top of the list, tap and hold it in the chat list (swipe left on iPhone) and choose Pin. The main list holds up to 5 pinned chats without Premium and up to 10 with Telegram Premium; folders allow more. Unpin the same way.

Pinned messages in a channel: how to use them

The pinned message is the one place in a channel every new subscriber is guaranteed to see. Owners usually put a channel guide there, the rules, a current offer or a poll. Changing the pin every few weeks works better than keeping one for a year — an old pin stops being noticed.
